This position is a ten-month position within WKU's Department of Agriculture & Food Science. This is primarily a teaching position with a larger service component compared to other faculty positions at WKU. Additionally, there will be opportunities to engage in research with students, other faculty, and industry partners.
Possible course/laboratory subject areas for this position may include animal reproduction, animal physiology, comparative anatomy, animal genetics, animal pathology, and animal nutrition. Other possible course subject areas may include introductory animal science, livestock management, and productions courses related to dairy, beef, small ruminants, swine, and poultry depending on the expertise and background of the candidate filling this position.
Two major service areas are student advisement and livestock health and safety. This position will serve as the primary advisor for the Department's pre-veterinary students. The Clinical Associate Professor will be instrumental in outlining necessary course work for students, linking students with internship opportunities, and preparing students for the application and interview process to veterinary school. This position will provide veterinary expertise to WKU Institutional Animal Care & Use and Institutional Biosafety Committees.
The Clinical Associate Professor will also be responsible for the health and safety of livestock located at WKU's Agriculture Research and Education Center (AREC). The WKU SmartHolstein Laboratory consists of 50 milk cows with dry cows and replacement heifers bringing dairy numbers around 100. AREC's beef herd is comprised of around 70 registered Angus and commercial cows. The equine herd is comprised of close to 40 horses to support equine science classes and riding teams. There are also a small number of goats. Occasionally sheep and hogs may be present at AREC on a temporary basis to support classes. While AREC staff see to the day-to-day health of these livestock, the Clinical Associate Professor would assist in major health/injury issues with animals, assist in breeding, outline preventative health programs, and order pharmaceuticals utilized at AREC. The Clinical Associate Professor would also be expected to serve in areas consistent with other faculty in the Department such as: committee assignments, participating in student recruitment, and advisor to student clubs.
The Clinical Associate Professor will have the opportunity to engage in research. The Department of Agriculture & Food Science has faculty with expertise in animal nutrition, meat science, and equine science. Additionally, the USDA has an Agriculture Research Station on campus and at AREC focusing on waste management research that employs several research scientists with varying expertise. The WKU SmartHolstein Laboratory highlights the latest in dairy technologies with 30 different industry partners. AREC houses a licensed creamery where cheese is produced and there is a licensed meats lab on campus. There are also other research opportunities at AREC and with regional industry and producers.
