The SPOT Clinic, associated with the Humane Society of Parkersburg, is seeking a veterinarian.  This is an exempt position.  The veterinarian provides high-quality medical care including spay/neuter and wellness services for both shelter animals and our community, as well being responsible for providing basic medical care for shelter animals.  The SPOT Clinic is a low-cost high volume spay/neuter clinic.  The incumbent is responsible for developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane treatment of all animals seen in the clinic.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The veterinarian reports to the Executive Director while working closely with veterinary technicians, clinic manager and office staff.  (S)he provides veterinary support and guidance to the clinic and shelter staff.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinates and directs medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices
• Leads the evaluation and establishment of medical and surgical protocols
• Continuously improves the medical management program to ensure high quality medical care and focuses on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems
• Examine all animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to undergo surgery
• Perform surgical sterilization
• Examine animals, supervise post-op rechecks and oversee order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete and full recovery
• Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow-up care
• Provide low-cost wellness services and vaccines to the public
• Provide veterinary oversight and care to the shelter population
• Supervise cleaning program for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease
• Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by staff
• Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate the community on responsible animal ownership
• Actively support and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of the organization’s goals and mission
• Represent the organization in a professional and courteous manner
• Provide quality service to clients, volunteers and staff recognizing their contributions to our organization’s success
• Provide guidance to staff for situations requiring medical problem solving
• Participates in hiring decisions for veterinary staff
• Provide guidance and support for shelter staff certified in euthanasia
• Provides professional credibility to the organization’s endeavor to fulfill its mission
• Participate on committees and special projects
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must currently hold or be willing and able to obtain an unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of West Virginia
• Must currently hold or be willing to obtain a DEA license
• Must possess above average animal handling skills
• Must maintain malpractice insurance
• Must have prior experience to include spay neuter procedures
• Must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with a diverse staff, volunteers and community in a professional, pleasant and respectful manner
• Must possess organizational, time management and planning skills
• Must be able to use good judgement and display a professional demeanor
• Must possess good analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement
• Must have a demonstrated ability to foster a positive working environment and be a motivator and leader

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Standing for extended periods of time
• Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance
• Ability to bend and kneel repeatedly
• May be subject to animal bites and/or scratches
• May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, as related to veterinary practice
