Highland Veterinary Clinic offers a minimum of a 3 week externship annually. Our externship will provide an excellent opportunity for a veterinary student to become familiar with a busy primary and referral practice and participate in the day-to-day operations of the hospital. The array of patients we see includes performance horses, race horses, western and ranch horses, servicing training facilities, breed farms, as well as a mix of other breeds and disciplines
Highland Equine Hospital is the most progressive equine center located in the western region of Oklahoma. We offer services that include endoscopy, regenerative medicine, intensive care, colic surgery, ultrasound, digital radiography, lameness evaluations, routine and advanced dental, reproductive and ophthalmic procedures. Highland Equine Hospital is a primary and referral practice and also offers ambulatory services. Currently there are 5 full time veterinarians and 18 staff. Two of the veterinarians are primarily large animal practitioners and two are mixed animal and one primarily small animal.
Housing will be provided for the extern. The extern room in the hospital has a queen sized bed, TV, desk, and its own shower and bathroom. There is a kitchen area the extern can use to store and cook their own food.
All applicants need to be veterinary student. We request 3 references with their email & cell number, and one general cover letter outlining your career goals. Students that spend time at Highland Veterinary Clinic as an extern will have serious consideration to be a one year mentorship associate position in the future. :-)
Clinic business hours are from 8-5 M-F and 8-12 Saturday. Assist the veterinarian and technicians with veterinary care. Surgical cases range from routine surgeries to more advanced surgeries such as arthroscopy, colic, upper airway, skin grafts, ophthalmic, & etc. The extern will be able to help the veterinarian on emergency and help with treatments of the hospitalized cases.
Working hours could vary depending on caseload and cases in the hospital.
The extern needs to have excellent communication skills, team-oriented, strong work ethic, and willing to learn.
If the veterinary student is interested in a mixed animal externship they are more than welcome to receive food animal and small animal experience if they like but it is not required.
