The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty position in Primary Care. The qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate will determine appointment rank.
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to instruct veterinary students in the art of general small animal practice while providing services to the Ames community and surrounding areas. The Primary Care service works in collaboration with other specialty services to provide exceptional patient care and customer services to our constituents in Iowa, the Midwest, and the nation. This position entails significant time devoted to clinical teaching and veterinary services within the Primary Care Section of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). Clinical duties will include occasional weekend and after-hours obligations. Additional efforts could include didactic and laboratory teaching, academic service, and outreach activities. Collaborative clinical research and publications, developing continuing education opportunities, and developing innovative teaching and/or clinical programs is encouraged. The percentage effort associated with these combined activities will be determined by mutual agreement between the candidate and the Department Chair of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.
The successful candidate will collaborate with the other faculty within the Primary Care service to develop student learning objectives in accordance with the service’s goals. Clinical teaching includes instruction and development of student’s veterinary knowledge and technical skills needed to be a successful veterinary practitioner. Clinical teaching and proficiency in small animal dentistry and outpatient surgical techniques such as ovariohysterectomy, orchiectomy, onychectomy, mass removals, etc. are required.
The successful candidate must have a collegial and collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of professional student and technician education. The candidate should be highly self-motivated, innovative, and possess excellent communication skills and experience working with a diverse population of students, clients, faculty, and staff. Furthermore, the candidate will demonstrate professional maturity that serves as a role model for students as well as a leadership style that contributes to a positive culture and have a compassionate and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the LVMC. Low-stress handling techniques are encouraged in the academic environment of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Required Minimum Qualifications:
· DVM or equivalent degree.
· A minimum of 3 years small animal primary care experience as a practitioner in a private or academic setting
· State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of employment.
