The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University invites applications for a Health Programs (Clinical Track) faculty position in Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine. The position is a multi-year renewable appointment available at the Assistant/Associate Professor depending on qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will be joining a team of 5 ACVS and 4 ACVIM faculty that are also board certified in, ACVECC (3) and ACVSMR (1) as well as a full complement of boarded specialists in ACVR, ACVAA, ACVO, and ACVIM-cardiology. Our excellent facilities include a fully equipped hospital with 24-hour certified technical staff, advanced imaging, the Matilda Wilson Pegasus Critical Care and Isolation Facility and the McPhail Equine Performance Center fully equipped for advanced sports medicine (https://cvm.msu.edu/research/endowed-chairs/mcphail-dressage-chair/mcphail-equine-performance-center).
The hospital caseload is predominantly equine but includes all large animal species. After hours emergency coverage is not envisioned for this position. The primary responsibilities of this position are: 1) sharing primary duties for elective surgeries and daytime emergencies including occasional food animal surgeries: 2) providing clinical service in lameness evaluation, diagnosis and treatment: 3) developing strong relationships with referring veterinarians: 4) providing didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction to veterinary students and residents; 5) collaborating with research faculty on applied research: 6) participating in state and national outreach and continuing education.
The successful applicant will have proficiency in surgery, particularly elective surgery cases, and in the diagnosis and management of lameness. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment with other faculty members, residents and staff. Opportunity exists for the applicant to become boarded in ACVSMR.
The position offers exciting opportunities to work in a collaborative environment to develop a surgical and sports medicine program focused on lameness using state of the art facilities and equipment. Facilities includes three surgical suites fully equipped with high definition arthroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy, ligasure, and a full complement of orthopedic instrumentation (LCP and DCP plates). In addition, state of the art imaging (including CT, MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound, digital radiography, and fluoroscopy), equine gait analysis, including motion capture system, force plates, EMG and saddle pressure mat are available.
