Primarily responsible for leading a marine resources service core, directing an independent research program, and providing veterinary oversight to the MBL, including IACUC leadership.
MAJOR DUTIES: 1) Lead a marine resources service core and be an active participant and collaborator in research efforts related to marine organisms at the MBL. 2) Serve as the Attending Veterinarian for the institution as outlined in the USDA Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and Public Health Service (PHS) Policy. Assist in assuring regulatory compliance and participate in IACUC activities. 3) Oversee clinical care to a wide variety of marine, aquatic, and vertebrate animals; assist in rodent colony health management. 4) Train vivarium staff and research personnel. 5) Provide consultation and collaborative support to MBL staff and scientists. 6) Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Leadership skills, excellence in verbal and written communication, collegiality, and the capacity to direct a professional service center at a leading research institution. Must have an established scientific background, with appropriate research experience in marine biology, molecular biology, and/or cellular physiology.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate will hold D.V.M. and Ph.D. (or equivalent) degrees and have at least five years of related experience. Must have an established scientific background and research experience in marine biology, molecular biology and/or cellular physiology. Experience and knowledge in the cultivation and management of a wide variety of marine organisms is highly desirable, as well as clear evidence of independent scientific productivity. Strong knowledge of regulatory issues, especially related to AWA, PHS and IACUC is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Massachusetts and have USDA accreditation in Massachusetts. ACLAM board eligibility or certification preferred. The working environment for this position requires exposure to various species of animals. Work is also performed in laboratory environments, with exposure to chemical and/or biological hazards. Work can involve lifting of up to 50 lbs and frequent standing and walking.
